Clinical Trial Patient Journey

Key barriers to clinical trial participation from the patient perspective

Insights from patients who have participated, or who have considered participating, in clinical trials tells us that giving patients the Informed Consent Form (ICF) to read and sign, is not enough to overcome the potential barriers they face. These barriers are amplified in diverse populations due to factors like the lack of diverse physicians, historical mistrust, and information not translated or culturally adapted.

The key barriers can be categorised into 4 areas:

Lack of Awareness

  • Don’t know it is possible

  • Don’t understand clinical trials and what is required to participate

  • Physicians also unaware

 Health Literacy

  • Information is not patient friendly

  • Concepts are complex

  • Industry jargon

Uncertainty

  • Distrust of Pharma

  • Benefits vs Risks

  • Side effects

  • Placebo

Trial Burden

  • Site visits – tests, time, logistics, costs

  • Impact on daily life
